Servant Leadership
Gorilla Wrestling Club
For the last 7 years I have volunteered as a coach for the Gorilla Wrestling Club which is held at Century High School. The Gorilla Wrestling Club promotes the sport of wrestling and the opportunity for wrestlers of all ages to participate in wrestling on a competitive basis. The club promotes self-esteem, discipline, and camaraderie through club participation, practices, and competition. Being a coach in this youth wrestling club has provided a way for me to practice teaching and coaching youth and I have found a passion for it. In recent years I have taken on a larger and larger role within the club. I am now in a role where I am made aware of important decisions which even included attending a state board meeting in the spring of 2017.
Bismarck Rotary Wrestling Tournament
During my last three years as a member of the University of Mary wrestling team we have been asked to volunteer to work the Bismarck Rotary wrestling tournament. This wrestling tournament has a rich history in the city of Bismarck and happens to be one of the largest tournaments in North Dakota. On a Saturday morning we volunteer approximately 6-8 hours of our time to work score clocks and help run the tournament in any way necessary. Working this tournament saves parents from having to work the tournament. In addition, it is a great way to give back not only to the community but to the wrestling community.
Slide the City Event
During my last three years as a wrestling team member, one way we give back to the Bismarck-Mandan area is through working at the Slide the City event. Our team volunteered to work the inaugural event and found it to be a fun and rewarding experience so we have been back every year since. Slide the City is a slide set up on the hill at Mandan High School and many other local businesses are invited to sell items and take part. Our job at Slide the City is to set up the slide, oversee the safety of the participants, work the slide, and eventually take it down. A day at Slide the City usually lasts around 16 hours total. Volunteering for an event like this gives the individuals on the team including myself exposure to members of the community.
