Activity Center
During the summer of 2014 I had the opportunity to work for the Bismarck Parks and Recreation Department as an Activity Center Leader. Activity Center is similar to the B.L.A.S.T after school program that runs during the school year except it takes place full days during the summer. That summer I was assigned to work at Sunrise Elementary in north Bismarck however students could open enroll at activity center from anywhere in Bismarck or the surrounding area. The opportunity allowed me to work with diverse students of all ages who were from various places in our community and who came from many different environments. This was a great way for me to learn how to work well with others and find a passion for teaching and helping youth. It was also a way for me to meet some faculty in Bismarck Public Schools.
Northridge Elementary Practicum Experience
During the spring semester of 2018 I had the opportunity to observe, teach, and work in a second grade classroom at Northridge Elementary in north Bismarck. Northridge is a Title One School in Bismarck due to the many low income students and their family environments. This Block II practicum experience has given me valuable experience in working with underprivileged youth and youth who struggle academically.
St. Mary's Grade School Practicum Experience
During the spring semester of 2017 I had the chance to observe, teach, and work in a fourth grade room at St. Mary's Grade School. Upon entering a private school, it may not seem like this is an opportunity to observe a diverse learning environment. However according to my practicum teacher for that semester, this group of students in his fourth grade class was the most diverse group he had taught in his tenure. It was certainly an eye opening experience coming to understand how you can encounter diverse students in any school today. The students who I taught in this private school were diverse because they came from low income families, single parent households, and some had behavior disorders.
Jeannette Myhre Elementary Volunteer
During the spring of 2018 I will be volunteering at Jeannette Myhre Elementary in the recess program under Ms. Tiffany Perrin. This opportunity at Myhre in the recess program will be a great place to observe what is probably the most diverse group students and the most diverse school in the area. From this experience I hope to gain valuable information about how best reach and help students who come from varying circumstances. It will also be great to see how other teachers and members of the administration at the school work together to help their students.
